Transfusion medicine (or transfusiology) is the discipline of medicine that deals with all aspects of blood and blood component transfusions, including hemovigilance issues. It addresses concerns such as blood donation, immunohematology and other laboratory tests for transfusion-transmitted diseases, clinical transfusion management and monitoring, patient blood management, therapeutic apheresis, stem cell collections, cellular therapy, and coagulation. The job also requires laboratory administration and an awareness of state and federal blood product regulations.
